The Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STSC) is one of the two subcommittees of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space Affairs (COPUOS), under the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

Meeting annually, this committee discusses questions related to the scientific and technical aspects of space-based activities and one such important item is the long-term sustainability of outer space operations.

The advancement of technology has only left us more susceptible to threats and we need to remember that these issues extend beyond inter-national disagreement. Cyberspace does not treat state and individual as separate entities and where does that leave us in a fight against crime or extremism? And while space-based activities remain the pride and joy of every country, how many lives are at stake? Information is power and satellites serve as an incredible network to process and transfer this information. If this information or their carriers are left vulnerable, are we not vulnerable as well?

Most of these questions need to be answered from a technical perspective and the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee provides these insights.

Agenda: The impact of weak cybersecurity on the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.
