My Golden Days at Clarence.
It’s over 60 long years since I left the portals of Clarence High School, on completion of my European High School and Senior Cambridge examinations.
The following years of my educational career at St.Joseph’s College, BMS college of Engineering and Indian Institute of Science brought memories of my days at Clarence.
This institution was totally responsible in moulding me to my current status. Firstly it instilled in me a secular spirit which is vital for your future. The values, interactive communications with different cultures and walks of life and the command of English in particular inculcated in me , stood me in great stead during my entire career. In fact it is relevant to mention here that during my frequent presentations in the missile field at Delhi Defence Headquarters and committees, senior bureaucrats and scientists including the late Sri. A.P.J Abdul Kalam always asked me whether I studied at Bishop Cottons or Baldwins ,the only schools they had heard of in Bangalore. I was so elated to mention the name of Clarence.
We grew up under Principals like Mr.Wilcox and Mr.Flack and marvellous teachers like Mrs.Cherian,Mr.Hobday and Mrs. Walker to mention a few. Sports achievements were low key although we competed against big schools. We travelled on bicycles to the venues and the teachers accompanied the youngsters in buses.
All our sports activities including the school sports were at Clarence playground as Assaye field was not in the picture.
The Scouts and Girl Guides movements were in full swing and we enjoyed our camps at Kumbalagudu under Scout and Guide leaders like Shankar Nair,Tony Carlier and Mr.and Mrs.Lucas.
“Those were the days my friends which we thought would never end —” as the famous English song goes.
My only advice to the, present student generation is to fully appreciate the school environment you know enjoy and remember the values you imbibe in your Alma Mater.
God Bless.
