CELEBRATING GOD%u2019S GOODNESS 179Kyle and Laura were engineers who had been inspecting the bunkers secretly being built for the man himself, but due to the sudden nature of the emergency, they had been trapped in the bunker since. The blizzard, unlike what Kyle believed, had begun nine years ago. And now that the Earth was heating up again, the snow would melt and then evaporate, creating clouds for the first time in six or seven years. Not that anyone would know. Whatever thousand or so of the human population that was left were stowed away in bunkers across the globe. Those who made it, anyway. The %u201cblizzard%u201d had finally started looking like one. This was a good thing - except it had an unforeseen consequence: the surface was now turning infertile.Kyle and Laura had become good friends during their time at the bunker. They had learned to survive amidst the storm. %u201cDoesn%u2019t look like we%u2019re getting out of this, ever,%u201d Kyle sighed. %u201cIt%u2019s alright. I do wish that the world didn%u2019t suddenly decide to freeze itself into oblivion, but, gotta do what we can with what we%u2019ve got,%u201d Laura reflected. Kyle was dejected. He hated waking up to the same bleak reality every day. %u201cMaybe one day,%u201d Laura began, %u201cjust one day, it%u2019ll be alright.%u201d Kyle looked up and smiled. He loved it when Laura gave him hope whenever it seemed like all was lost. %u201cWell, I%u2019ll prepare some supper,%u201d he said, standing up. %u201cI%u2019ll join you,%u201d Laura said, following him into the kitchen. The formation of ice on the glass plane of the viewing room had weakened it and, under the weight of the layers above it, had started cracking. Laura and Kyle had also noticed that the bunker%u2019s systems were starting to fail. The heating system had now completely stopped functioning. Without warning, the glass pane of the viewing room cracked and broke, sending shards scattering across the floor. Moments later, a tremor rocked the bunker and some of its walls began to split, groaning under the strain of a sudden earthquake. Kyle and Laura both understood that their time in this prison was up. They looked at each other, held hands and hugged each other one last time. Kyle placed a soft kiss on Laura%u2019s forehead. She returned the gesture as the building collapsed around them, as another earthquake struck. Two decades later, when the Earth%u2019s temperature returned to normal and the ice finally melted, nature placed two white lilies near the site of the bunker in their memory. The only two remaining flowers on Earth.Aayush SabatClass 10CEndlessly, she worked, without a break, without a distraction, for hours on end, on the old wooden handloom that had withered in some places from years of use. She was an orphaned girl, a poor, unfortunate victim of the childhooddepriving act of child labour. The Sky Is Beautiful
