CELEBRATING GOD%u2019S GOODNESS 245Alchemists sought wisdom through symbolic transformation, believing that altering matter mirrored a spiritual journey.Chemists, in seeking knowledge through systematic experimentation, found a pathway to progress. Though chemistry may have left behind alchemy%u2019s spirituality, it remains bound to an alchemical desire to unlock mysteries. Even today, the spirit of the alchemist lingers in the quiet laboratories of the world, inspiring chemists to keep searching, whether for enlightenment, discovery or both.Instead of elixirs of life, chemists sought explanations for observable phenomena and laws that would unlock practical applications, eventually fueling the Industrial Revolution.Yet, the alchemist%u2019s vision of transformation, both personal and universal, still haunts chemistry%u2019s pursuit of knowledge. Where alchemists saw the four elements (earth, air, fire and water) as manifestations of cosmic forces, chemists replaced these with atoms, electrons and molecules. The shift from alchemy to chemistry represented not just a new scientific discipline but a different way of viewing the world. Alchemists regarded matter as fluid, imbued with spiritual essence; chemists defined it through measurable properties and interactions. Alchemy embraced the mystical and metaphysical; chemistry relied on materialism and observable facts.Despite their differences, chemistry inherited fundamental practices from alchemy, such as distillation, crystallisation and chemical manipulation. Alchemists%u2019 exploratory techniques laid the groundwork for the scientific method that chemistry embraced. In the process of discarding alchemical mysticism, chemistry retained an undercurrent of transformation, shifting its focus from the self to the discovery of universal truths. This continuity demonstrates that, while chemistry may have abandoned alchemy%u2019s spiritual aims, it did not escape the alchemist%u2019s pursuit of hidden knowledge.Ultimately, alchemists and chemists are two sides of the same coin, united in a quest for understanding. Nithya V.12 ScienceMaybe in Another LifeMalgudi was a town of many fulfilled dreams and somehow all the stories led back to what was behind the massive oak doors that Swami found himself in front of on more than one occasion. But, somehow, he never found the courage to walk through the beautifully carved doors. He wondered if it was the carving of the rather disturbed-looking owl that kept him away, but deep down, he knew that it was what waited for him through those doors. The locals called it God%u2019s gift to the people of Malgudi. They said that within its walls, time stood still and every book held a life that could have been lived. However, Swami had never really understood what they meant and he had never experienced the truth of the Malgudi Library until this moment.
