A Chat with the Counsellor - Mr. Joshua Edward1. What helps students stay grounded during big changes? As a building needs its foundational pillars to weather whatever changes and renovationsmay happen, so does a person need the pillars of company (God, family and friends) tostick by their side in the transitions of life.Spend time with these three, getting to know them on their own merit, and allowingyourself to be known and loved by them. Their love will hold you strong, as the inevitablestorms of life mould and shape you to face them.2. What is one healthy way to respond to failure or disappointment?Failure is the most common experience humans go through in their lives. No one hasnever failed, the people who say otherwise are fools, you%u2019d be better off being a failurethan a fool. The reason it is the most common is because it remains the only way we can ever learnand grow. Never let anyone look down on you, even yourself, for trying and failing at anattempt. To quote Wayne Gretzky, you miss 100% of the shots you don%u2019t take.3. What small habits can help students become more confident over time?Confidence is three kinds of muscle, each possessing a different strength:A. The strength to say %u2018I can do this%u2019 when trying something,B. The strength to say %u2018I can do better than this%u2019 when you fail at something, andC. The strength to say %u2018I will be alright if I can%u2019t do this%u2019 if it%u2019s not meant for you to achievesomething. With any muscle, the key to building strength is to exercise the muscle with hard weightsand resistance. So try hard things, difficult things, impossible things.Be curious and learn from your mistakes when trying these things. And once you%u2019vefound your impossible thing (because we are only human and limited), know that youstill have other seemingly impossible things that will become easier as you work withyour first two muscles.1.
