CELEBRATING GOD%u2019S GOODNESS 235The Prodigal DogIt was a bright, sunny evening. I had just come back from a long day at school and was really excited. Why? Because my parents were out of town and that meant that I had the whole house to myself! I was looking forward to a day of lazing around and playing with my Pomeranian, Coco. She%u2019s the cutest dog in the world with her curly chestnut brown fur and big brown puppy eyes, wagging her short fluffy tail around. As soon as I had freshened up, I called out to Coco and she came jumping, her eyes alight with excitement. We spent hours playing all sorts of games. I was Captain Oceanella Von Amphitrite the Second and she was my faithful comrade! Soon, I started to feel hungry and an idea came to mind: %u201cWhy not go to the candy store and buy some chocolate? There%u2019s no one to stop me anyway.%u201d I smiled mischievously and ran off without a second thought.I soon returned with a full stomach, an empty purse and a triumphant grin on my face. I happily called out to Coco, %u201cLook, Coco, I%u2019ve brought treats for you!%u201d But no response came. %u201cHuh? That%u2019s weird,%u201d I thought. She would usually come jumping at the sound of my voice. I called out a few more times and then panic began to set in. I looked through the entire house, almost turning it upside down in the process. I went through all of her usual hiding spots, under the table, in the garden behind the bushes, but to no avail. Looking towards the door, I realised that I had left the door wide open in my excitement to go to the candy store. I rushed out into the streets and asked my neighbours if they had seen her, but nobody had. The sun had already begun to set. As I was returning home disappointed, a car zoomed past me at full speed and a horrible thought crept into my mind: %u201cWhat if a car had%u2026?%u201d%u201cNo,%u201d I pushed that thought away, fighting back tears. I went back to my room and sat on the bed, dejected. %u201cWhat was I going to do now?%u201d %u201cWhere in the world was she?%u201d Then, I heard a soft snore and then another. It was so faint that I barely heard it. I listened harder, waiting for another sound. Another faint snore. I looked around the room searching for the source with my heart pounding in my ears. There, fast asleep in a shoe box I had forgotten to throw away, was Coco, all cuddled up and hidden. I shouted with joy, waking her up in the process. She blinked a couple of times, staring at me as if to say, %u201cWhat%u2019s all this noise?%u201d I hugged her tightly, not wanting to let go ever again. %u201cThank God%u2026,%u201d was all I managed to say before bursting into tears.Hiranmayi MudgalClass 10B
